A Midsummer Night's OBE

My first fully conscious astral projection happened in the Summer of 2009.

One night I woke up without meaning to, so after checking the time to make sure I didn't have to get up any time soon, I laid right back down. I had made a habit out of using these moments of waking up naturally in the middle of the night to practice astral travel, so I started concentrating on my breath. It was not long before I started to fall back asleep, but I was aware of the whole process. I started to feel my heart beating strongly and I felt like I was sitting up, but with absolutely no effort at all-- I just floated right up from the waist up.

When I realized what was happening, I started to get really excited, and that sent me right back down to my body. Fortunately, the connection between the two worlds was still very "loose" so I went back to concentrating and immediately started to float up again. Pretty much the same thing happened, I couldn't contain my enthusiasm, and I felt myself back down on the bed in an instant.

It wasn't over yet though. I was determined to make use of this opportunity, so I continued to concentrate and tried to remain calm. I started to sit up, once again as if I were actually sitting up but with no effort on my muscles at all. I was sitting straight up looking at the bedroom. I put my hands down on the bed and pushed myself off and did a little float to the end of the bed. I could tell that I was in the astral, but to make sure I looked behind me and saw my physical body still in bed where I left it.

I wanted to go somewhere, so I made my way to the window. I had heard or read before that it's not always a good idea to go out the window just in case you're still on the physical plane, but the curtains were closed, and an air conditioner was installed in the window with steel bars around it, all of which I just walked through like it was nothing. I was on the fifth floor and I found myself out on the fire escape. I tried to jump with the intention of flying away, but I got startled that I might fall to the ground, and in that moment of fright I found myself back in my physical body.

I tried not to move so I could see if it would happen yet again. As I recall I focused on my heartbeat this time, and started to float up again into a sitting position. This time my legs felt stuck in place, so I was just there sitting up in bed. Something unusual appeared in front of me, something that wouldn't be in the physical. I became somewhat fascinated and distracted by it and before I knew it I was back in bed lying down for the last time.

Even though I felt a little disappointed that I didn't make it far from the apartment, I was really inspired to keep working towards having more out-of-body experiences so I could explore further. On the surface, it may sound like not much happened, but for me it was truly a profound experience.
